1996 AWA ROCHESTER AUCTIONS
Copyright (c) 1996 Ludwell A. Sibley, Author of Tube
Lore
Rochester,
NY, September 4-7, 1996 - The auctions at this year's Antique Wireless
Association meet offered a broad variety of collectibles. Ed Gable's communications-equipment
sale on Thursday included a group of coilsets for the WW II German version
of the National HRO receiver. Friday's all-day auction was expanded by
the inclusion of material from three estates and Museum- support donations.
It ran late as a result. The "literature" part included an unusual
supply of early radio catalogs in good condition, and a letter signed by
Samuel F. B. Morse. High-interest tubes included a spherical audion (one
filament good), a French M‚tal E4M transmitting tube from WW I, two iconoscopes,
a scarce WE 224B 'scope tube, and lots of WE audio types. Early radar tubes
may have finally become "collectible": there was spirited bidding
for magnetrons and other specialized types in little demand a few years
ago. Friday's general auction included a nice De Forest six-unit Interpanel
(deaccessioned by the Museum), an excellent Federal 59, a sharp Grebe CR-
5, and an all-brass L. M. Ericsson (Swedish) telegraph register. Total
for both days auctions was $62,500, very close to AWA's record.
